GMES - Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security

GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) ia a European initiative for the implementation of information services dealing with the environment and security. The GMES concept originated a meeting in Baveno, Italy in May 1998, which generated a call for Europe to act jointly in the field of environmental monitoring using remote sensing to define a well articulated strategy in this area and to build upon its excellent scientific research community, its proven prowess in Earth observation and its nascent political will to express its objectives in international forums related to climate changes and other global environmental topics.

GMES represents the European response to the needs of citizens in Europe to be able to access reliable information on the status of their environment and to enjoy improved security.
